When my husband and I first started homeschooling, we were pretty lax. We didn’t have a set schedule or even a certain space to where we’d school our kids. It varied from day to day. It wasn’t necessarily a problem for my husband at the time. He figured as long as our kids were getting taught everyday, that was fine. However, I felt differently. If I was going to homeschool, I wanted a space set up just for that purpose.
In the summer of 2012, I started brainstorming about a possible school set up. The house we lived in at the time had a small office area right off of the kitchen/dining area. After studying that space over the course of several days, I decided that space was going to be our school space. After discussing this idea with my husband, who also loved the idea, I got to work. I bought whiteboards, dry erase markers, posters, everything you would find in a typical classroom setting. Once everything was bought and set up, our kids couldn’t believe the transformation. They absolutely loved the new set up and by the time school started again, they were excited to be working in their new classroom.
Even though we’ve moved twice in the last 10 years, whatever place I’m living in has a “classroom.” As my kids have gotten older, I’ve included them in decorating “our classroom.” Once they start back to school next week, they’ll be entering a Fall Wonderland with leaves and pumpkins. We’re also brainstorming what our classroom decor will be for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
When you start homeschooling, have a space for your kids to learn. Decorate it. Make it a fun, happy space where your kids will want to learn.
